Questions

Grouped in the order people ask them. What it is, whether it fits, whether it is really solid, what it really costs, what happens if it does not work out, and why the wait is what it is.

01

What is this exactly

What wood is it?
Indonesian plantation teak from Java, SVLK certified, heartwood only. One species across all five pieces. No sapwood, which is the pale outer ring, and no knots in a table or bench top.
What does Clearbridge make?
Five pieces. 01 Dining Table from $2,550, 02 Dining Chair from $690, 03 Dining Bench from $1,190, 04 Lounge Chair from $1,650, 05 Side Table from $480. That is the whole catalog and it is not about to grow to fifty.
What are the two finishes?
Natural is a clear penetrating oil and leaves the teak golden. Umber is a dark penetrating oil and takes it to a deep brown. Both soak into the wood rather than sitting on it as a film, so neither one can chip or peel, and both can be repaired at home with sandpaper and more oil.
Is anything upholstered?
Only the 03 Dining Bench, where a cushion is optional, and the 04 Lounge Chair, where it is not. Two fabrics: unbleached linen and olive wool felt. Covers unzip and wash cold. Everything else is bare oiled teak.
Is it assembled?
Chairs, the lounge chair and the side table arrive assembled. The 01 Dining Table ships as five parts and goes together with one hex key, because a fixed 84 in top does not get up a stairwell. The 03 Dining Bench ships whole.

02

Will it work in my home

What size table do I need?
The 01 Dining Table comes in 72, 84 and 96 in, all 38 in deep and 30 in high. 72 in seats six, 84 in seats eight, 96 in seats ten. Leave 36 in of clear floor on every side you want to walk past. If the room cannot give you that, take the shorter top.
Will the chairs fit under the table?
Yes. The 02 Dining Chair is 18 in wide with a seat at 18 in, and the table apron clears it. Allow 24 in of table edge per person, so six chairs fit a 72 in top and eight fit an 84 in top without anyone knocking elbows.
How do I choose between Natural and Umber?
Natural in a room with pale walls and a light floor, Umber in a room with a dark floor or a lot of contrast. Both darken indoors, Natural more than Umber. Every product page shows both, and the second image on each card is the Umber version.
Can I see it in a room before I buy?
There is no showroom. That is a large part of why the price is what it is. What we can give you instead is every dimension in inches and millimeters, the weight, the board count, in situ photography on every product page, and 30 days to send it back.
Do the pieces match each other?
They are the same species, the same grade and the same two oils, so a chair bought a year after the table will read as the same wood. It will not be an exact color match on day one, because the table has had a year of darkening. Within a year of living in the same room they converge.

03

Is it really solid

Is this solid teak all the way through?
Yes. Every part is solid teak, heartwood only. No veneer, no MDF core, no particle board, no teak-look laminate on the edge. The grain on the surface runs through the full thickness of the piece. A dining top is 30 mm, a side table top is 25 mm.
Then why can I not see any joints?
Because they are on the inside. Mortise and tenon at every frame joint, drawn tight with a concealed stainless A2 bolt where a part has to come apart again. Nothing is screwed through a surface you look at. Flat continuous faces are a construction decision, not a styling one.
A top is one board?
No, and any company that says its 84 in top is one board is either lying or selling you a board that will split. An 84 in top is four boards, edge joined, laid out by hand so the grain runs in one direction across the whole surface. The joint lines are visible if you look for them. That is what solid wood looks like.
What is SVLK?
Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu, the Indonesian timber legality system. It tracks a log from the plot it grew on to the container it leaves in. Every batch of teak we buy arrives with its papers. It is a legality and traceability document, not a sustainability rating, and we are not going to describe it as more than that.
How do I know any of this is true?
Clearbridge has no customer reviews yet, because Clearbridge is new. Rather than buy some, we show the material: a cut edge, the grain across a joint, the workshop, and the weight in pounds. 145 lb for a table is a number a veneer table cannot produce. Ask us for the SVLK documentation on your batch and we will send it.

04

What does it really cost

Is the price on the product page the final price?
It is the final price of the piece, including tax and including your finish and size. Freight is the only thing added, it is listed per piece, and it appears as its own line in the cart before you go anywhere near a payment field.
What is freight?
$249 for the 01 Dining Table and $149 for the 03 Dining Bench, anywhere in the 48 contiguous states. Those two travel by freight truck to the curb. The chairs, the lounge chair and the side table go by parcel and ship free over $750.
Why is freight charged per piece?
Because a table and a set of chairs leave on different trucks with different carriers. Rolling that into one number would mean guessing high on some orders and losing money on others. Two lines is the honest version.
Are there discounts?
Chairs get cheaper per chair in sets of 2, 4 and 6, and that is shown on the product page. There is no sale, no first-order code, no bundle you have to hunt for. The price you see is the price everyone pays that day.
Why is it cheaper than a store?
One workshop, one website, no showroom, no reseller, no importer. There is one margin between the wood and you instead of three. You are paying for teak, hours and freight.

05

What if it does not work out

Can I send it back?
Yes, within 30 days of delivery, unused and in its original crate. Keep the crate until you are sure. Email us and we send a return authorization and either a parcel label or a freight pickup.
Who pays the return shipping?
On parcel shipments we do. On freight shipments, the 01 Dining Table and the 03 Dining Bench, the buyer pays the return transport. Moving a 145 lb crate back across the country is a real cost and we are not going to hide it in the price of every table.
What if it arrives damaged?
Photograph the crate before you cut it open and photograph the piece before you move it, then tell us. Transit damage is ours to fix. We send a replacement part or a replacement piece and arrange collection of the damaged one. You do not pay freight twice.
What does the warranty cover?
10 years on construction: a joint that opens, a leg that loosens, a top that splits at a glue line. We repair, replace the part, or replace the piece, in that order. It does not cover the finish, the cushion covers, marks and dents, or a piece kept outdoors or somewhere wet.
Can I fix a scratch myself?
That is the point of an oil finish. Sand along the grain with 240 then 320 grit, blend a hand's width past the mark, wipe on penetrating oil and wipe off what has not soaked in. A white water ring usually lifts the same way. Full instructions are on the teak page.

06

Why the wait

How long does an order take?
6 to 9 weeks from order to shipment. That covers selection, conditioning, cutting, joinery, sanding, oiling, crating and the ocean crossing.
Why not keep stock and ship next day?
Because stock means a warehouse, and a warehouse means guessing which finish and which length people will want. Everything that is guessed wrong ends up discounted, and everyone else pays for that in the price. Made to order is why there are only two numbers on this site instead of a list price and a sale price.
I need it by a date. Will it make it?
Count back nine weeks from the date and order then. If you are later than that, email us with the date before you order and we will tell you honestly whether it can be done. We would rather lose the order than miss the date.
Is there ever a sale?
No. There is no countdown, no low stock warning and no seasonal discount. The lead time is the only reason to order today rather than next month, and it is printed on every product page.
